3+1 Arte Contemporânea announces the opening of There is more water entering the soil (Há mais água a entrar no solo), the first solo exhibition by the artist Inês Brites at the gallery.

The work of Inês Brites considers the status of everyday objects in a world of mass consumption, both in the physical and virtual realities. Her process of investigation starts with the act of collecting objects or images, then undergoes a contemplative view, and finally results in a visual response. Her practice is manifested mostly in the form of sculptural works made through unique moulds of various materials – wax, silicone, latex – pursuing a sensorial and aesthetic interpretation of the objects she examines.

For this exhibition, the artist presents a collection of pieces that explore liquid matter, observing objects in light of her interest in the mucous membranes and flexible appearance of molluscs, reflecting her fascination with sea slugs (described by their peculiar shapes, textures, colours and transparencies, each species with one or many characteristics in a single body – all playing an important role in their protection against predators). Inês Brites continues her inquiry into all things mundane, showcasing from her own personal archive compositions of objets trouvés and sculptures. Her growing desire to experiment with new translucid materials is an attempt to find characteristics of the nudibranchs in objects that are related in some way to water, liquid or the aquatic world.

Inês Brites (Coimbra, 1992) lives and works in Lisbon. She did her BA in Painting at Faculty of Fine Arts of Lisbon and studied at KAS: Conservatorium & School of Arts in Ghent, Belgium.
