3+1 Arte Contemporânea is pleased to present Infinita medida (Infinite measure), the latest solo exhibition by Maria Laet (1982, Rio de Janeiro) at the gallery.

Maria Laet’s multidisciplinary work seeks to document moments, spaces and movements that are often invisible. The media used for her practice function as archives, not only of the artist’s presence and actions, but also of the movements of nature. The act of breathing, human touch, the flow of a river, or the growth of a tree are all fields that are part of her work’s the poetics.

In Infinite measure, Laet explores ways of realising the emptiness and make the brevity of the moment evident, through photography, video, drawing, engraving and installation. This search leads to the discovery of incommensurable lines, with no beginning or end, and uncertain boundaries that constantly change. These infinite measures can be found in the continuous gesture between two stones, in the constant movement of the waves and the tide, expanding and shortening the bounds of the sea and covering up the presence of the body in the sand, or in the action of widening the limits of a rubber band so that it contains more stones between its shape. These actions can be recorded through the meticulous repetition of a movement, or by emphasising both the presence and absence of the body. Thus, Infinite measure is an attempt to materialise what is invisible, abstract or in constant transformation.
