3+1 Arte Contemporânea is pleased to present Farleigh, the first solo exhibition of Tito Mouraz (1977, Porto) at the gallery.
Tito Mouraz’s photography starts from an interest in the landscape. Nature, its remote places, and how the human figure inhabits these spaces are themes that are always present in the artist’s work. His images are delimited by geographical territories, and all his series are governed by borders. However, in Farleigh, Mouraz explores not a specific place, but an emotional geography.
Thus, the title Farleigh does not refer to a real place, symbolising instead an imaginary, distant place, a mountain shrouded in mist. Similarly, the images that are part of this series contain a character of uncertainty. The human figures, often in unbalanced or odd positions, are anonymous, never revealing their faces. The landscapes do not portray identifiable places: the house is not a house, it has no address; the tree is not a specific tree.
These uncertain landscapes and figures, in addition to the combination, for the first time, of colour and black and white works, evoke an ethereal world, which does not seem to possibly be part of reality. Mouraz confronts the viewer with images marked by silence that, strangely, awaken a feeling of nostalgia. They are ghosts and spectres, almost palpable but, at the same time, so distant.
