3+1 Arte Contemporânea gallery has the pleasure to present the work of artist Jorge Queiroz (b.1966), in his next solo show, called A Múmia e o Astronauta [The Mummy and the Astronaut].

Jorge Queiroz has selected a group of works from different time frames, mediums and formats, and has organized them in the space of the gallery within a new logic. The works are distributed throughout the two floors and they bring up an array of unexpected connections due to their proximity.
In the images created by Queiroz we can recognize gestures, figures, stories and spaces that insinuate themselves, but it’s in the manner these presences melt together that one field of action is sketched out. A field of indeterminations, advances and set backs, where any possibility of hierarchy and permanence is smoothed out. Therefore, it’s when the background and the figure melt with one another, when the space and the character intertwine, or when the colour and its absence are inverted, that we find the fleeting balance where these images live. In this very particular imaginary, what prevails is a simultaneous movement of construction and deconstruction of references. An exercise of suggestion that rehearses clues avoids certainties and points to an identity that does not want to be stable. More than having the ambition to conclude or close something, as the naming of a theme, the fixation of a composition or the classifying of an action, what Queiroz promotes, in an open manner, is an exercise of search. A search that, based in a transversal condition of de-territorialisation, questions the nature of doing and looking.

Jorge Queiroz was born in Lisbon in 1966. MFA School of Visual Arts, NY 1999. He has exhibited his work extensively in the United States and throughout Europe, including solo exhibitions at Fundação Carmona e Costa, Lisbon (2012); Serralves Museum, Porto (2007); Horst-Janssen-Museum, Oldenburg (2006); and Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin (2004), where he was artist-in-residence. Queiroz participated in the Biennale of Rennes (2016), 4th Berlin Biennale (2006); the 26th São Paulo Biennial (2004); and the 50th Venice Biennale (2003). Until recently a long-time resident of Berlin, Queiroz currently lives and works in Lisbon.
