3+1 is pleased to present the upcoming exhibition by Claire de Santa Coloma (Argentina 1983) of recent carved wooden sculptures and works on paper.

In this exhibition the artist aims to assemble the artworks in a specific manner to create places of ponderance, questioning the way in which we view and engage with works, in doing so making a dynamic to consider and pass more time viewing each object rather than the coined phrase of the three second viewing average on a work – calculated by Art Institutions.
The sculptures of different types of woods continue de Santa Coloma’s investigations of the medium and interplay between spatiality and form, while employing various techniques, which result in numerable surfaces, open to interpretation and consideration. Here, the physicality of the surfaces is brought into focus, as the undulated surfaces of the works are revealed and paralleled with those which have a smooth veneer.

A bench sculpture is positioned in front of a pictorial wall mounted work. The artist deliberately positions and guides the viewer to this formal scenario, by implying a mode of viewing, perhaps resting to allow the eye to wonder over the horizontal piece, to consider each object or to recall experiences within the formal platforms such as a museum. In these intimate moments and perspectives, whether seated or circling the works, the artist attempts to slow down time, as she explores the way in which contemporary culture devours images and information, by presenting an arena and place for respite from the vast quotidian consumption. Thus, allowing brief instances and junctures for pause, thought and rumination on all that are absorbed and produced.

Claire de Santa Coloma (1983 was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She lives and works in Lisbon. Santa Coloma studied direct carving sculpture at Ateliers Beaux Arts de la ville de Paris. At the same time, she obtained a MA in Visual Arts Research at La Sorbonne, Paris. Between 2007 and 2009 she was artist in residence at Casa de Velázquez, Madrid. Between 2009-2010 she attended the Independent Studies programme at MAUMAUS, in Lisbon, with which she participated in the 29th edition of the São Paulo Biennial.
In 2010, Santa Coloma participated in the residency at La Belle Alliance (Metropole), at Goethe Institute Lisbon. In 2017 she was invited to join the programme of Lisboa Capital de Cultura Ibero Americana with a residency at Coruchéus studios and a project for Galeria Quadrum. Also in 2017, she won the EDP Foundation New Artists Award (Lisbon 2017). Santa Coloma exhibits her work regularly since 2008.
