Claire de Santa Coloma
Eclipse
3+1 Arte Contemporânea is pleased to present Eclipse, the latest solo exhibition by Claire de Santa Coloma (1983, Buenos Aires) at the gallery.
Claire de Santa Coloma’s work contains a strong sense of physicality, where the artist’s intent is influenced by the materials used. Her wooden sculptures are often guided by the original shape and condition of the material, trying to get as much as possible out of the matter, with the minimum number of gestures. These are works in which the subject centres around the idea of sculpture itself, as the focus is always the material and its shape. This notion is also present in her works on paper where the act of drawing is an evidently sculptural gesture.
In Eclipse, Santa Coloma continues to explore these ideas in a meditative and completely distilled exhibition centred on a limited number of drawings and sculptures. In the drawings of the Cut-out series, the artist makes hundreds of small, precise cuts in the paper, in a time-consuming action that results in organic, abstract forms. These are works that reflect on impermanence and the passage of time, which are completed with light, changing – almost imperceptibly – as it shifts. The wooden sculptures – all made from trees endemic to Argentina – that accompany these drawings invite the visitor to sit, contemplate and meditate on the materiality of the works on display. When compared, we discover a game of gravity, where the sculptures both evoke the idea of weight, of a body firmly grounded in the earth, and the feeling of lightness, of a star floating in space.
The exhibition’s room sheet will have a text by Sara de Chiara.
