3+1 Arte Contemporânea is proud to announce (dis)assembly, a solo exhibition by Sam Smith.

Sam Smith’s work analyses the language of cinema and its relationship with the political and material ecologies. Working across mediums (video, sculpture, performance, and installation), Sam Smith’s practice addresses the relation between technical and natural worlds, subject and object, from a hybrid point of view. Technical devices are shown outside their reified image, sharing materiality and sensoriality in consonance with the organic universe outside the frame.

In the exhibition (dis)assembly, the artist extends his research on the narrative forms of video, the apparatus involved in capturing and producing moving images, and the geological impacts of media technology. The show is composed of video, objects and a series of ten digital prints overpainted with earth pigments. For the first time, Earth Return – made in collaboration with Ama Josephine Budge and April Lin 林森 and initially conceived for online presentation – will be reconfigured as a multi-channel video installation. In sync with the ecological and geological themes in Earth Return, the 2021 film, Capture, forges a link between the natural and the technological spheres, deconstructing a digital video camera and scientifically analysing every piece on an elemental level. Sam Smith’s work blends experimental film and speculative fictions with historical and analytical data, exposing ways in which moving images are constructed, manipulated and utilised.
