ARCO Lisboa 2022

During ARCOlisboa 2022 we presented a solo project with recent works by Tiago Baptista (Leiria, PT 1986), mounted on a site-specific structure and in a non-formal scheme, in doing so, reinforcing the themes and modus operandi of the artist’s practice. The installation, consisting of works on paper and canvas blurring the distinction between interior and exterior, surface and structure, figurative representation and abstraction. A skeletal-like framework harks to historical building construction of the 17th century, acting a platform delegated as a conduit, the focus is shifted and concentrated on the pieces and their content. In these loaded compositions, seemingly improvised associations are visible creating narratives with open beginnings and ends, as well as acting as independent agents. Bellying this apparent randomness are references to the quotidian pursuits, ecological concerns, literature, history, culture and identity. The multifaceted associations reveal a crossover of various ideological references, unveiling visual pathways to follow, opening up states of immersive thought or contemplation. Baptista’s subjects in his work seems to oscillate between revealing and obscuring his processes and raison d’être for why these artifices are presented, instead perhaps, the works act as “pauses” within a stream of the artist’s consciousness, allowing the viewer to have access to the realms which exist in the world(s) of the author. Here, it is left for us to decide on the associations made, interpret and whether at all, this was the artist’s intention or not.
