3+1 Arte Contemporânea is pleased to present Fac-símile, the latest solo exhibition by Rita Ferreira (Óbidos, 1991) at the gallery.

Fac-símile is, above all, an exhibition about the construction of painting. Introducing new techniques into the creative process, it explores the ideas of addition and subtraction, working with layers and textures. The oil paint is applied fluidly, never giving in to the weight that is often associated with it.

The notion of a facsimile – a copy or reproduction of a document or engraving – is distorted: the works on show are originals, not reproductions. However, they are based on real references, which are transcribed into painting, almost like objects that have been crushed against paper, imprinting their shape on the material. The artist also examines the notion of scale, changing the size of the prints and observing how this change allows for different readings. The results – which, while not abstract, are not necessarily figurative either – are symbols whose original meaning and shape can only be guessed.
