Along a line
3+1 Arte Contemporânea is pleased to announce Along a line, a group exhibition which brings together works by Olga de Amaral (1932 CO), Inês Brites (1992 PT), Cabelo (1967 BR), Chiachio & Giannone (1969 & 1964 AR) Evy Jokhova (1984 EE/UK/RU), Carlos Noronha Feio (1981 PT), Giulia Paz (1999 BR), Thomas Szott (1993 BR).
Along a line unites contemporary practices which employ and engage with textile and fabric-based materials as a means central to their compositions. The exhibition seeks to engage the audience to consider and reflect on the various approaches of production that incorporate textiles and the various applications that are intuitively carried out. While expanding and challenging the perceptions of other modes of contemporary practice, which were previously considered relegated to that of craft.
Works with textiles which are adorned with stitches, applique, weaving, felting and prints and dyes, to create dialogues and stories, evoke emotion, depict ideologies and thoughts, are woven into complex arrangements. The tactile nature of the material is called upon as a tool for expression in lieu of other more formal methods of artistic endeavour. Texture and fluidity are brought to the forefront as their dimensionality are pondered in the overall “tapestry” that is created.
It is through the divergent artists’ practices and their unique techniques with thread and weaves that their narratives are revealed, untwined, sharing their meaning, stories and memories. Transformed by the hand that is present in these soft bodies, like a path to meander, to follow or which diverges, here the eye can wonder unrestrained across the compositions, some which appear static and others that catch a breeze and are activated. In this selection of works, the purpose is not to categorize all forms of textile techniques, however, to propose a few lines to discover along the way.
